Design evaluation

Evaluation and application setup

AB3000 effectiveness depends on frequency, material thickness, XY area, placement and orientation relative to the electromagnetic field. Establish a baseline in the intended assembly before reducing absorber thickness, shape or coverage.

Baseline evaluation: Start with the greatest practical thickness and XY area, and evaluate multiple locations or multiple parts to establish the potential performance level in the end-use assembly.
Optimize after baseline: Once baseline performance is established, reduce or change material thickness, XY shape and location to identify the minimum material configuration that meets the application requirement.
Conversion and placement: AB3000 is supplied on a removable liner for handling and die-cutting. Select the adhesive-backed or -WO configuration needed for the planned assembly and validate placement in the final geometry.

Storage and handling

Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture when AB3000 Series is kept in its original packaging below 25 deg C (77 deg F) and below 60% relative humidity.

AB3000 Series variants

The AB3000 Series uses three magnetic-layer thicknesses, each available in adhesive-backed and -WO configurations.

Variant Magnetic layer thickness Adhesive configuration Selection note
AB3010 0.100 mm Acrylic non-conductive adhesive Thinnest adhesive-backed option.
AB3030 0.300 mm Acrylic non-conductive adhesive Mid-thickness adhesive-backed option.
AB3050 0.500 mm Acrylic non-conductive adhesive Thickest adhesive-backed option.
AB3010-WO 0.100 mm Without adhesive Thinnest -WO option.
AB3030-WO 0.300 mm Without adhesive Mid-thickness -WO option.
AB3050-WO 0.500 mm Without adhesive Thickest -WO option.

Magnetic-layer thickness excludes protective film and carries a stated +/-10% tolerance. -WO means without adhesive. Published technical data are representative or typical and are not product specifications.

Performance evidence

AB3000 performance data are frequency- and configuration-dependent. The supplier test methods below provide context for evaluating permeability, power loss and transmission attenuation without converting typical graph results into guaranteed specifications.

Permeability across frequency
The published permeability data show both real and imaginary permeability changing with frequency. AB3000 selection should therefore be evaluated against the frequency region of the actual EMI source rather than treating permeability as a constant material value.
Short coax measurement using Keysight magnetic test fixture 16454A from 1 to 1000 MHz and 7-mm coax from 0.1 to 18 GHz per ASTM D5568-01.
Power loss by absorber thickness
Modified IEC 62333-2 testing presents separate power-loss curves for AB3010, AB3030 and AB3050. The response changes with both thickness and frequency, supporting thickness as a design variable during end-use evaluation rather than a universal grade ranking.
Modified IEC 62333-2. Qualitative interpretation only; no exact values reconstructed from the supplier graph.
Transmission attenuation power ratio
Rtp testing presents separate frequency-dependent curves for AB3010, AB3030 and AB3050. The results reinforce that thickness should be assessed in the intended frequency region and assembly geometry.
IEC 62333-2 section 4.3; supplier test samples used 100 x 75 mm lateral dimensions. Qualitative interpretation only.
Evaluation contexts

Application areas

3M lists the following potential application areas for AB3000 Series. Final thickness, placement, area and orientation should be validated in the end-use assembly.

Mobile, computing and display electronics
Potential application areas include mobile phones, computers, tablets and displays where near-field EMI absorber placement can be evaluated within the available assembly geometry.
Camera, sensor and test systems
3M identifies camera modules, antenna grounds, test and measurement equipment and sensors as potential AB3000 application contexts.
Radar and avionics equipment
Radar and avionics equipment are listed as potential application areas, with final material configuration dependent on the target frequency and physical placement.
